Heritage Christian School: supporting consistent learning with Apple‑managed devices.
Located in Port Macquarie, New South Wales, Heritage Christian School serves students from Kindergarten to Year 12. The school is part of Christian Education Ministries (CEM), a national network that supports Christian schools with their curriculum, operations and technology decisions across Australia.
As part of its approach to teaching and learning, Heritage Christian School uses Apple devices within a school-managed environment, giving students and teachers consistent access to technology across year levels. JB Hi-Fi Education supports the school through device procurement, enrolment and ongoing support services, ensuring devices are ready for use and aligned with the school’s operational needs.
Across Christian Education Ministries, most schools operate under a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) model. When Heritage Christian School joined the network, the school took a considered approach to its device strategy, choosing to maintain a managed environment and transition to Apple devices.
“For Heritage Christian School, maintaining consistency for students and staff was a priority, so a managed device environment made sense,” says Craig McKeown, IT Manager at Christian Education Ministries.
Creating a consistent learning experience
Heritage Christian School’s broader vision for digital learning is shaped by clear priorities: equity across classrooms, duty of care and long-term value from technology investment.
“A managed Apple environment helps keep the experience consistent and well governed across the school,” McKeown says. “It supports student wellbeing and helps teachers maintain focus and get the most out of their lessons.”
The result is a shared digital experience for students and educators, with lessons designed for a single platform and consistent access to learning for every student. Apple also provides a range of built-in features and apps that support education, including Apple Classroom and Classwork.
With Apple Classroom, teachers can guide learning in real time by opening specific apps or websites, limiting access when required and helping keep lessons on track.
“Apple Classroom gives teachers practical tools to guide what students are doing in the moment,” McKeown says. “It supports focused learning without adding complexity.”
“Teachers know exactly what tools students have access to, which makes lesson planning more straightforward,” says Miriam Torres, National Apple Sales Manager at JB Hi-Fi Education.
Equity and equal access across the classroom are key benefits of a managed Apple environment. When every student uses the same device model and software configuration, lessons can be delivered consistently, and no student is disadvantaged by the technology they are using.
“Consistency is at the heart of this,” Torres says. “When devices are managed centrally, every classroom starts from the same point so teachers can get on with what matters most: teaching.”
Managed Apple devices also support security and duty of care, which are key considerations for Heritage Christian School and its parent community. IT teams have control over what runs on student devices, and unapproved apps or websites can be addressed centrally when required.
“If there’s something we don’t want running on student devices, we can address it directly,” McKeown says. “That visibility and control is important.”
Simplifying deployment and management
From an operational perspective, the value of a managed Apple environment also lies in the simplicity of deployment and ongoing management. Apple School Manager and a device management service allow devices to be enrolled, configured and updated remotely.
Christian Education Ministries uses Jamf to manage the Apple fleet at Heritage Christian School, supporting consistent configuration and software management at scale.
“That readiness matters,” McKeown notes. “Because devices are managed, we can push apps out or make them available for everyone. It helped us significantly during the last NAPLAN testing, where we had to update devices with the required compatible browser version. It saved our IT team a lot of time.”
“From our perspective, Apple offers a premium platform with strong longevity, which helps deliver long-term value over the lifecycle of the device,” says Sam Carter, ICT Project Manager at Christian Education Ministries.
“It also supports a more streamlined deployment approach, allowing us to roll out and manage devices efficiently through our existing systems.”
Transitioning to Apple represented a change for staff. To support a smooth rollout, JB Hi-Fi Education arranged training through Apple Professional Learning Services, helping teachers build confidence in the new environment. These sessions focus on practical classroom use, creativity tools and effective integration into teaching practice, supporting both the initial rollout and ongoing professional learning.
“It was a helpful foundation for our teaching staff to step into the Apple environment,” says Carter. “It gave them a sense of confidence moving into the new year with new devices.”
By adopting a managed Apple environment, Heritage Christian School has created a consistent and structured approach to digital learning that supports both teachers and students. With the right tools and a shared platform in place, the school can deliver a reliable learning experience aligned to the needs of its community, supported by JB Hi-Fi Education throughout deployment and beyond.
